Preventing Back Pain

The Denver, Colorado Swedish Medical Center spine experts want you to take steps to prevent your back pain before it becomes serious.

Exercises, proper lifting and sitting correctly are some of the areas where you should focus to lessen your back pain.

There are many activities you can do that will prevent low back pain, but one of the most important steps you can do is learning to bend and lift properly. Here are some helpful tips:

  • If the object you are lifting is too big, too heavy or is awkward - GET HELP
  • When lifting an object spread your feet apart to give yourself a wide base of support
  • Bend at your knees, not at your waist
  • Hold the object you are lifting close to your body
  • Tighten your stomach muscles as you lift the object
  • Lift using your leg muscles
  • Do not twist when bending to lift an object (keep your spine neutral)

Other preventative steps:

  • Lose weight
  • Stop smoking
  • If you are standing for long periods of time, alternate using a stool to rest your foot
  • If you are sitting for long periods, use a chair with adjustable arm rests, back, and/or seat
  • If sitting or driving for long periods of time, place a pillow or rolled up towel behind your lower back
  • Learn to relax - meditation, stress reduction and exercise are very helpful
