Shedding Some Light on How Swedish is Reducing Infections
Swedish Medical Center recently purchased two UV lights to help eliminate bacteria, spores, and viruses from patient care areas.
These ‘robots’ use ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms via short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UV-C). This particular Clorox System produces germicidal UV-C at a wavelength of 254 nm, inactivating the microorganisms’ DNA. This technology is being used AFTER EVS does their traditional terminal clean on a room, NOT in place of traditional cleaning.
The program is dedicated in the two most prevalent areas for CDIFF (MTU and CCU) and will be used every time a CCU room turns over. Additionally, the program will expand to the following areas:
- ORs during evening terminal clean
- ER between 2am-4am
- Burn Unit
