da Vinci Robot-Assisted Prostate Surgery

Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery for Prostate Cancer Patients

Robot-Assisted Prostatectomy to Remove the Prostate

Each year, approximately 180,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. For many of these individuals, surgery is required to effectively treat the cancer and promote healing and recovery. While traditional surgery is one option, the Cancer Care Center at Swedish Medical Center also offers patients a less-invasive alternative using the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. Utilizing robotic-assisted technology, this advanced surgical option is quickly becoming the preferred treatment for removal of the prostate following early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Traditional vs. Robotic-Assisted Prostate Surgery

Traditional surgery to remove the prostate gland (called "radical prostatectomy") requires a long, eight-10 inch incision (as seen below on left) and may result in substantial blood loss, a lengthy recovery period and the risk of impotence and incontinence.

Alternatively, a prostatectomy with the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System is less invasive, requiring only a few small incisions in the abdomen (as seen below on right). With the assistance of the robotic system, surgeons are able to see vital anatomy more clearly and operate more precisely and with greater control to remove cancerous tissue.

Potential Benefits of a Robotic Prostatectomy

Although any diagnosis of cancer can be traumatic, it may be reassuring to know that if prostate surgery is recommended for you or a loved one, the cancer has probably been caught in the earliest stages. Robotic-assisted surgery to remove the prostate provides even more good news by minimizing the recovery time and long-term effects often associated with traditional surgery.* Here's a closer look at some of the benefits many patients experience:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Fewer complications
  • Less scarring
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • And a faster return to normal daily activities

* While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci® System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary.

Is Robotic Surgery Right for You?

Many patients with prostate cancer may benefit from the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System at Swedish. If you would like to learn more or find out if you are a good candidate for this treatment option, consult with your physician or contact the Swedish Cancer Care Center. Several factors, including age and general health, are important in determining if robotic-assisted surgery is right for a patient.
