Indium-111 White Blood Cell Scan

Instructions and Preparation Information

This test is done in order to identify any bone marrow abnormalities. Please arrive in the Radiology department prior to the exam for the admissions process. A nuclear medicine technologist will greet you for the appointment. A small intravenous line (I.V.) will be started by the technologist for the exam. A small amount of blood will be drawn from the I.V. in order to be tagged with a radioactive tracer. The I.V. will remain in place for later reinjection. You will be able to leave and return 3 to 4 hours later to be injected with the tagged blood. You will return for imaging at 6 and 24 hours post injection. During these wait times, you may eat or drink as usual and resume normal activities. Imaging will be approximately 45 minutes each time. Before 24 hour imaging, you will be injected with a radioactive tracer that will allow for bone marrow imaging. Imaging will begin 30 minutes post injection and will take approximately 40 minutes.
