Many women are considered high risk when it comes to pregnancy, and at Swedish Medical Center in Denver, we are committed to working together to achieve the best outcome possible for every pregnancy. In addition to specialized medical care for patients experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, our Perinatal Resource Center (PRC) provides information and support so that even a complicated pregnancy can be a positive family experience.

What constitutes a high-risk pregnancy?

Many factors can cause a pregnant woman to be considered high risk, including:

  • If fetal birth defects are anticipated based on family history
  • Her age (under 18 or over 35)
  • If she’s pregnant with multiples (twins, triplets or more)
  • If she has an existing disease or medical disorder (i.e. diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney problems, blood disorder, cancer, STD)
  • If she has history of pre-term labor and delivery or pregnancy loss
  • If she’s under or overweight
