What is Orthopedic Trauma

Orthopedic Trauma is a subspecialty of orthopedic surgery, and focuses on the care of patients with fractures and other injuries. Surgeons who are designated as orthopedic trauma surgeons not only complete an orthopedic surgical residency, they also complete an additional year of fellowship training specializing in trauma. Therefore, these surgeons have unique skills that qualify them to care for patients who are experiencing:

  • Multiple injuries, including fractures
  • Joint fractures
  • Pelvic fractures
  • Fractures of the acetabulum (concave surface of pelvis)
  • Non-healing fractures
  • Fractures with infections

Orthopedic trauma surgeons have revolutionized fracture care by using research and data to develop minimally invasive techniques which require shorter, less painful surgeries, For the patient, this means less blood loss and a strong enough fixation to withstand immediate weightbearing.

As a Level 1 Trauma Center, Swedish offers an orthopedic trauma program to handle complex injuries as well as to develop standardized approaches to the care of injured patients.
