Emergency department services and treatments

Our emergency department features the latest medical equipment for adults and children. Here, our experienced ER care teams provide swift, effective medical treatments.

Our emergency care program

We know no one gets better in the waiting room — which is why we've changed some things about ours. In our ER, 95 percent of our patients are taken directly to a treatment room and never sit in the waiting area.

We do this because our goal is to provide quick, expert care that responds to your needs. Our emergency physicians are available 24/7 to address your questions promptly and ensure your needs are met.

Swedish is proud to provide the first ER in the state to be verified as Pediatric Advanced by the Colorado Pediatric Preparedness for the Emergency Room program for our commitment, training and resources dedicated to providing the highest quality care to pediatric patients.

Treating more than 90,000 patients annually, our ER provides:

  • A panel of board-certified specialists
  • Board-certified adult and pediatric emergency medicine physicians
  • Experienced nurses with certified emergency nursing (CEN) credentials
  • Three dedicated trauma rooms — one specifically engineered and equipped for children

Low-risk chest pain program

If you come into our emergency department with chest pain, our initial assessments determine whether your symptoms are caused by a heart attack. If we rule out a cardiac event, our nurse practitioners (NPs) use our progressive program for low-risk chest pain to diagnose your condition. We also offer the same low-risk chest pain services at our freestanding Swedish Medical Center - Southwest ER location in Littleton.

Neurological intensive care unit (neuro ICU)

An extension of our neurological care program, our neurocritical care unit is equipped with 18 dedicated beds, advanced diagnostic capabilities and monitoring technology. They identify critical problems and prevent or minimize permanent neurological damage. With standardized protocols and management guidelines, our team offers you new hope.

Pediatric emergency services

Our main campus ER features five pediatric treatment rooms (for patients 18 years old and younger) set apart from our adult rooms. All rooms are staffed by a pediatrician and an emergency-trained nurse and technician. Should your child need to be hospitalized, we have a dedicated, 24-hour pediatric unit open seven days a week, which has 11 beds for children. We also offer pediatric emergency services at our freestanding Swedish Belmar ER location in Lakewood, should you be in the area and in need of unexpected medical care for your child.

Pediatric intensive care unit

At our PICU, our pediatric intensivists — medical doctors specializing in the treatment of seriously ill or injured children — provide expertise and personalized attention when your child needs it most. We work hard to create a comfortable environment for your child and the rest of your family.

Our PICU contains dedicated beds for children in need of intensive care. Other features and amenities include:

  • Pediatric care nurses
  • Private patient rooms with adjacent bathrooms
  • Sleeper couches so you can room with your child
  • Comfortable, convenient family lounge
  • Spacious, child-friendly unit
  • State-of-the-art technology and design

Trauma care

As a Level I Trauma Center, our team provides comprehensive acute and critical care services to both our adult and pediatric patients. Our experienced personnel provide trauma education and contribute to the basic scientific research in the area of traumatic injury.
