What causes knee pain?
The knee is one of the most complicated joints in your body. It is made up of the knee cap (patella), the upper bone (femur) and lower bone (tibia). All of these are held together with ligaments, tendons and muscles. Cartilage provides a cushion between the bones and enables them to move smoothly.
There are many reasons why your knee may hurt. It could be due to knee osteoarthritis, injury or overuse catching up with you as you age. Whatever the reason for your pain, our orthopedic specialists can help you get back to doing the things you love.
What happens during knee replacement surgery?
During total knee replacement surgery, our surgeons replace the knee with an artificial joint made up of three parts:
- A metal part covering the femur surface
- A plastic and metal part covering the tibia surface
- A plastic part that resurfaces the kneecap
Together, these can make the knee work smoothly without pain.
Robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacement
In addition to traditional knee replacement surgery, our team is skilled in the Mako robot-assisted partial and total knee replacement procedures. During these surgeries, the surgeon uses the Mako robotic arm to remove diseased bone and cartilage. Mako technology was designed to help surgeons provide patients with a personalized surgical experience based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy.
